The Hazen High School Quiz Bowl team was looking to repeat as state 2A champions, but they fell just short finishing second on Saturday (April 25) in Conway.
Hazen was nosed out by Conway Christian School on the broadcast aired statewide on Arkansas TV.
The Hazen senior high quiz bowl team, made up of members Michael Bowman, Trever Fulmer, Christian Hune, Vesper Feazell, Mathew Essex, and Pepper Feazell, had won all 19 matches it played this year, and had a 35-game winning streak dating back to the 2024 season.
“Our students demonstrated and showcased not only their intelligence but their determination to be the absolute best. Competing at the state level is an accomplishment in itself, and they rose to the occasion,” said Hazen School District Superintendent Andy Barrett.
Hazen replaced three starters on last year’s championship team and had kept its winning streak intact headed into the finals against. Conway Christian, a squad they had defeated before.
Hazen had never won back-to-back state titles in any AAA-sanctioned activity or sport.
While disappointment reined due to the outcome, the team is still planning to compete at nationals. Also, Michael Bowman was named MVP.
Barrett said the kids deserved tremendous credit, but he wants the community to also recognize the advisors who helped build and develop this Quiz Bowl team.
“Susan Boothe and Stacey Bowman have put in countless hours and balanced busy schedules to give our team the best opportunity for success. Their untiring effort is hard to find and greatly appreciated by all,” he said.
